TAYMOURIAN SCHOOL:
ASAR GALLERY OF ART

During the reign of Amir Taymour and his descendants, the art world experienced another brilliant and outstanding period of creative output.

Although his rule was characterized by cruelty and widespread repression, Taymour enjoyed art, literature and the poetry of Hafez and Nezami. One of the Persian cities conquered by Taymour, Shiraz, had been the center of a renowned artistic tradition of its own (the School of Shiraz). Taymour, who engaged in the practice of relocating artistic and intellectual talent from conquered areas to his capital at Samarkand, "transferred" much of the talent present in the Shiraz School to his own court. Notable among the Shiraz exiles was the artist Abdolhai, who was dispatched to Samarkand and commissioned to complete various works for the royal court. In addition, several renowned artists of the Baghdad School, including Abdolali and Baghdadi, were also placed in the service of Taymour's community of artisans.

Although Taymour did succeed in transforming Samarkand into a focal point for the artistic talent of the time, the Taymourian Artists would not achieve the prominence of other traditions, such as the still-remarkable Herat School.
