During the reign of Shah Rokh, Eskandar,
a decendant of Taymour , became the governor of Shiraz Province.
With the help of the renowned artist Jonaid, Eskandar established
several art schools in Shiraz and Yazd. A small albeit ambitious
project at the time, the products of the Shiraz-Yazd academies
now stand as renowned relics in museums the world over.

- Meanwhile, in nearby Herat, Bysonghor
(the son of Shah Rokh and governor-general of the province) established
a state-sanctioned gathering of over forty painters, illuminators
and calligraphers under Ostad Jafar Bysonghory. Himself a well-educated
conoisseur of fine art, Bysonghor encouraged the Herat School
to commodify beauty in the name of "art." Among the
artists who entered history as a result of their association
with the Herat School were Sultan Ali Shustari, Ebrahim Tabrizi,
Dervish Hossein Naghash and Farrokh Beig. One of the most important
masterpieces of this age, the Shahnameh of Bysonghor,
was directly sanctioned by the royal court and established the
Herat School as an influential new force in the arts.

- The Herat Era coincided with the appearance
of one of the most famous miniaturists in Iran, Ostad
Kamaleddin Behzad. Born around 838 A.H. and trained under
the supervision of Ostad Mir Seyed Ahmad and Rohollah Mirak Khorasani,
Behzad left a legacy at least as enduring as the Herat cabal's
works combined. However, in the recent past controversy has arisen
over the originality of several pieces later credited to Behzad.
